COOL SOCKS! (PART A)
Sunday April 13, 10-1 pm and Monday April 14, 9 to 12.
6 hours. Intermediate sock knitters upwards - Must have knit at least one sock!
An advanced sock workshop for happy sock knitters who wish to refine or spice up their socks. Casting on and the essential properties of sock tops, including Channel Island cast on (a beautiful edge for a 1 x 1 rib). Heels; Garter Stitch Short Row and Turkish. Grafting assistance for all with the aid of a Toe Chimney (no loose stitches!). Fancy pattern considerations, use of markers, controlling the gathering effect of two-colour-per-rnd patterning and the incorporation of double-knit soles for added warmth. Provisional Crochet Cast On and knitting upwards for long-leg socks and three methods to avoid tight bound-off edges for toe-up socks. Pros and cons of customized socks for eccentric feet and alternative sock construction methods.

Supplies - Smooth wool-blend yarns (these need not be ‘sock’ yarns) in Worsted or DK/Sport (5-6 sts per inch) in 4 or more light colours. 3 sets of dpns; two in sizes appropriate to your yarn (they need not be the same size) and a significantly finer set. Scissors, crochet hook, blunt darning needles and usual knitting paraphernalia. (Fine sock yarns and needles may be used, but is far easier to see the details of your stitches and techniques in larger yarns and light colours).

6 hours. Intermediate sock knitters upwards - ideally should have taken Part A or Scintillating Socks
Yet more advanced sock techniques for happy sock knitters! An in-depth look at Tubular sock edges (both cast on and bound off) for single and double ribs and two methods for working them easily. For decorative effects we have Striped Quilting heel flap stitch, Twined Crochet Bind-Off, Flying Swallows stitch pattern and a motif knitting technique. Facings for top-down and toe-up situations. Short-row toes (for the no-graft sock) and Sideways Garter St bands for no-swatch sock sizing.
Homework
In contrasting colour, similar weight yarn (to main yarn), cast on 8 sts.
Work 6 rows of Stocking St., end on completion of a purl row.
Cut off yarn and tie on main yarn, work 6- 8" length in Garter St. Knit every row.
Leave 1m/yd of yarn attached and stitches on a holder or needle.

Examples of Norwegian Childrens' Hats
Learn how to Fair Isle while making a Norwegian Hat.
6 hour class: Each student will learn how to do two color knitting while making a traditional
style hat for a youngster. Expand your knitting repetoire and lose that fear of color work. Hat will be of a similar
style to the ones pictured. If the student does not finish during class (it's only 6 hours after all)
experienced 'Fair-isler's' will be available at Borealis.

Supplies:2 balls Finullgarn yarn, Double points and a 16" circular in appropriate size.

Twisted Float Shrug
Make the Vogue Knitting Twisted Float Shrug
3 hour class: Each student will create a swatch based on the Fall Vogue Knitting 2005 cover sweater (designed by the instructor ). In this class students
will use their measurements to determine the correct size of a cocoon sweater and perfect sleeve placement.
The student and will work up a swatch utilizing all techniques used in creating the VK sweater.
Homework: None
Supplies:2 balls contrasting yarn, Double points and a 24" circular in appropriate size, 8 stitch markers,
measuring tape, pencil.

Fabulous Finishing
You've put a lot of time into knitting your sweater, but if the finishing is poor all of that effort is for naught. Learn the basics of weaving in ends, blocking, sewing pieces together and picking up stitches for a collar or button band.
